Where does the power come from and who is building the substation?

Accepted Answer

CleanSpark engaged Priority Power to secure a 285-megawatt Federal Energy Authorization with CenterPoint Energy, the regulated transmission company for the region. Priority Power is building the project substation, and will procure power once the facility is operational. The site interconnects to the existing ERCOT grid through that substation and draws from the same Texas energy mix that already serves the region: natural gas, wind, solar, and nuclear. CleanSpark also operates as a flexible, controllable load. Compute can throttle down during ERCOT conservation events, which supports grid reliability rather than straining it.

Will the site be lit up at night?

Accepted Answer

No. Exterior security lighting uses downward-facing, shielded dark-sky fixtures aimed at the ground rather than outward. Perimeter lighting is motion-activated, not always-on flood lighting. Server rooms run in near-darkness and the facility is largely unmanned overnight. The goal is for the site to be notably dark and unremarkable after hours.

How loud will the data center be?

Servers are liquid-cooled in a closed loop, which eliminates the high-velocity fans that drive noise complaints at conventional data centers. Measured from the base of the equipment, the facility runs about 55 to 65 dBA at 100 yards, comparable to a normal conversation or a residential air conditioner, and it is effectively inaudible at a mile. Outdoor dry coolers run slow and throttle down further at night. Acoustic modeling, equipment selection, setbacks, and sound barriers are all part of the design.

How much water will it use?

The facility uses a modern closed-loop cooling system that is filled once during commissioning and continuously recirculates, so there is no daily evaporative water consumption. Average total use is roughly 3,300 gallons a day, including the fire loop, restrooms, office, maintenance, and humidification. For comparison, an average golf course uses about 312,000 gallons a day and a pulp and paper mill more than 13.7 million. Construction uses more water, but reclaimed water is trucked in for dust control and concrete uses water-reducing admixtures and chemical curing for up to a 95% reduction.

What about construction traffic?

The project is working with contractors to set designated haul routes, restricted hours for heavy trucks, and posted speed limits on local roads. If neighbors see trucks speeding or off-route, they can contact the project directly. Once the site is operational, staffing is about 100 people on staggered shifts, far less concentrated than a typical employer of that size.

How long will construction last?

The build is staged over several years, so the loudest activity is not constant. Timeline changes and milestones are shared in advance, and the project publishes a direct point of contact so concerns can be resolved quickly.

The site plan is still being finalized and will be shared as soon as it is available. Not knowing what is going where is one of the most frustrating parts of this process, and the project will move as fast as it can to close that gap.

Does CleanSpark own the battery storage (BESS) facility?

Accepted Answer

No. CleanSpark has no affiliation with the battery energy storage (BESS) facility next door. Parcel 15997 was sold to a separate operator that develops grid-scale storage, a category that is expanding across ERCOT to firm up intermittent generation. That project is entirely independent of CleanSpark's operations. Any questions about the BESS site should go to that company or to Austin County.
